NW Briefs | Husky men’s soccer team blanks UCLA on road

WESTWOOD, Calif. - The men’s soccer team at Washington handed 24th-ranked UCLA its first home defeat of the season with a 1-0 victory Sunday at Drake Stadium.

Senior forward Ely Allen scored his conference-leading eighth goal of the season to lift the Huskies (7-6-2, 2-3-1 Pac-10) past the Bruins (8-6-2, 4-2-1).

“Obviously, it’s a big, big win for our program, especially given that the margin of error for our hopes of making it to the postseason is very small, if there is any left at all,” said UW coach Dean Wurzberger. “Beating UCLA down here just shows that we had a lot on the line and we responded.”

The game’s only goal came in the 24th minute when Allen rushed UCLA goalkeeper Brian Perk on a clearance. The clearance hit Allen in the chest and found its way into the goal before either Perk or Allen could get to it.

The eight goals for Allen are a career high as he’s taken over the scoring load since Kevin Forrest was lost for the season with a foot injury. Allen has scored four goals in the past three games.

Stephen Fung, a redshirt freshman, got the shutout for the Huskies. His fifth shutout came after four saves and despite the fact UCLA outshot Washington 15-4 and had a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Melissa Beal came off the bench and played a role in both goals as Washington (5-9-1, 2-2-1 Pac-10) was a 2-0 winner over visiting Oregon (8-7-2, 1-3-2). Beal entered the game after halftime and set up the first goal when her hard shot was deflected to the top of the box where Jenna Robison collected it and produced an 18-yard blast into the net. Four minutes later, Beal scored on a 15-yard strike off an assist from Shuree Hyatt.

• In double overtime, 11th-ranked San Diego (12-2-3, 3-1-1 West Coast) finally put away host Gonzaga (10-6-1, 2-3) for a 1-0 victory. San Diego’s Jackie Garcia decided the match at 101:27.

• Morgan O’Friel, a junior, had the goal for Eastern Washington (7-8, 2-4 Big Sky) as the Eagles were 1-0 winners at home over Idaho State (6-5-6, 1-2-3).

NOTES

Teams from Vancouver, Wash., and Bremerton finished third and fourth, respectively, in the USTA Junior Team Tennis 18-and-under Advanced National Championships at Tucson, Ariz.

• Tim Feenstra, an assistant at the TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge, slipped to a 78 to finish at 293 to tie for 30th and earn $795 at the PGA Assistant Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
