UW Men’s Basketball | Freshmen try to make points
NEW YORK - When Washington and Syracuse square off today, the key matchup could be the first meeting of freshman guards - the Huskies’ Venoy Overton and the Orange’s Jonny Flynn.
The consolation game in the NIT Season Tip-off begins at 1:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden.
Two years ago, Flynn played for Washington coach Lorenzo Romar on the USA U-18 National Team that won the 2006 FIBA Americas title.
“I liked his competitive spirit,” Romar said. “He absolutely could go out and get 25 points, but he also could get the ball to his teammates and play great defense.”
Overton, a 5-foot-11 graduate of Franklin High, had six assists, five rebounds and four points in Wednesday’s 77-63 loss to Texas A&M.
“Venoy was outstanding at times,” Romar said. “But he’s still growing up and learning the college game.”
The 5-11 Flynn was 0 for 6 from the field and scoreless in a 79-65 loss to Ohio State on Wednesday, with four assists and four turnovers.
